Several unnamed persons have been booked for offering namaz outside two mosques in the old city area in violation of prohibitory orders on Eid last week, police said on Friday.
City Superintendent Police Kuldeep Singh Gunawat told the media that clerics had assured the district authorities ahead of Eid that no one will be allowed to offer prayers on roads outside mosques.
"Despite such assurances a large number of people offered prayers on the road outside the Eidgah ground under Delhi Gate Police Station and another mosque in a locality under Kotwali police station," said the officer, adding, the FIRs were lodged on April 26.
Police are reviewing video footage of the day to identify those who participated in the outside prayers.
Earlier police in Kanpur said they have booked more than 2,000 people on similar charges in three FIRs.

"We just reminded him how he came into the international arena through T20 (39-ball 61 at Old Trafford, in August 2011). It's a coincidence that his T20 performance has helped him make a comeback. Hard work always pays, when he was dropped nobody thought he will come back. He had a very good Ranji season, and got a double hundred. We are seeing the new version of Ajinkya, people are really surprised the way he is hitting the ball so long while playing proper cricketing shots," Amre was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Rahane has always been considered a technically sound batter. But, he was never really seen as a T20 specialist since the shortest format of the game has seen players with brute force and muscle excel more as batters. However, Amre debunked that myth as he revealed how much CSK skipper Dhoni has been impressed seeing Rahane use his technique to excel in T20s for Chennai.
"His game is built on timing and he has got it back," said Amre. "Even Dhoni has spoken about his technique. People wrongly say that technique is not important in T20s. I am very happy because as coaches we always insisted on technique, it really matters in T20," Amre said.
An Australian woman has been charged with fraud after she used the identity of a dead pilot in order to avoid a traffic fine, the Independent reported. 33-year-old Stephanie Louise Bennett pleaded guilty to using Sea World pilot Ash Jenkinson's identity after she was caught using her mobile phone behind the wheel last year in December.
In order to avoid the mandatory $1,078 fine, Ms. Bennett went online to claim she was not at fault. She then used information from the pilot's death notice to nominate Mr. Jenkinson as the driver of her vehicle. She allegedly found Mr. Jenkinson's full name and date of birth in an obituary notice following his death.
As per ABC, Mr Jenkinson died on the Gold Coast Broadwater on January 2 when the helicopter he was flying collided with another helicopter in mid-air. He was killed, along with three passengers on board - Sydney woman Vanessa Tadros, and British couple Ron and Diane Hughes.
When Mr. Jenkinson's widow received the fine notice just weeks after his death, she raised the matter with the traffic office and police on February 13.
After an investigation, Ms. Bennett pleaded guilty at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday, April 26 to fraud and identity theft, according to 9News. She said that she was going through "personal matters" and "financial troubles" at the time, and had tried to undo her actions the next morning ''but the website didn't accept it.''
In an email to the court, which was read aloud, she apologised "for the turmoil this has caused anyone" and said she was "immensely regretful for my actions".
Following her guilty plea, Bennet will be sentenced on May 19.
A mother and a stepfather in US' Texas have been arrested after they allegedly tattooed their children by force, then tried to remove the tattoos once authorities got involved, New York Post reported.
As per an arrest affidavit obtained by KTRE, Megan Mae Farr, 27, and Gunner Farr, 23, tied down their 9-year-old and 5-year-old children and forcibly gave them tattoos. While one received a tattoo on the foot, the other child received one on the shoulder, according to the report. The investigation alleges that the children were tied down with a rope, their mouths covered with tape and a rag covered their eyes.
However, when the biological father and stepmother saw the tattoos on the children, they reported the matter to Child Protective Services (CPS).
When the couple came to know that CPS was looking into the matter, they tried to evade arrest by forcibly removing the tattoos. They tried to cover the tattoos by "cutting, scraping, and scrubbing" the areas, and removing them by rubbing the tattoos with lemon juice.
''There were visible injuries on the child at the specific location of the tattoo and it appeared that the flesh was removed from the body at the tattoo location and this happened about the time that CPS got involved in the allegations of the child abuse,'' interim Zavalla Police Chief Lt. James Denby told KTRE.
On Monday, both parents were arrested and charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint.
While Megan Mae Farr was charged with two counts of injury to a child and unlawful restraint, Gunner Farr was charged with one count of unlawful restraint and one count of injury to a child.
The children have since been placed in the care of CPS and investigations are ongoing.

The Delhi University's move to spend Rs 5 lakh on a magic show as part of its centenary celebration has run into rough weather with a section of teachers questioning the rationale behind organising such a programme amid a "severe crunch of funds".
According to a poster of the event, famous Jadugar Samrat Shankar will present the show on May 3 at the multipurpose sports complex at the varsity. It also said that the programme is being organised by the University of Delhi's Culture Council.
The entry is strictly through registration, reads the poster.
A varsity official said the show is being organised to develop scientific temperament among the students.
Opposing the move, a section of teachers alleged that the magic show was a "sheer wastage of public money" and pointed out that various R&D grants and innovation projects have been discontinued due to paucity of funds.
"One should not forget that the Delhi University (DU) is not Hogwarts. When the official committee itself has acknowledged severe crunch of funds for library, laboratory, infrastructure development and research, spending public money on magic shows is sheer wastage," Rajesh Jha, a former Executive Council member of DU, rued.
Jha, who teaches at the varsity's Rajdhani College, noted that DU should be a centre to promote excellence in research to disseminate scientific temper.
"The R&D grant and innovation projects have been discontinued. The development fund collected from students was increased by 150 per cent. In such a scenario of fund crisis, organising a magic show is putting unnecessary pressure on the finance of the university," he emphasised.
The magic show also comes in the backdrop of alleged non-payment of pensions and salaries to pensioners and ad hoc teachers of several colleges under the varsity.
Meanwhile, the Delhi University defended the step and said the amount (of Rs 5 lakh) was not big as "singers usually charge Rs 40 lakh to 60 lakh for a single performance".
"Nobody has to pay for the magic show. But the entry is through registration. We are taking out money from the centenary celebration fund. The amount is not big. For big shows, colleges pay in lakhs. This amount is nothing," the varsity official said.
"We are organising this show to build scientific temperament among the students. Around 3,000 people are expected to attend the show. The magician is renowned across India and he is charging us a very less amount," he added.
Assistant Professor Abha Dev Habib from Miranda House suggested that the university could have organised a seminar where researchers could have imparted some kind of knowledge instead of the magic show.
"At a time when the university is facing various issues, money is being wasted on such programmes. It could have been a seminar organised by the alumna, former students and researchers that the university has produced," she argued.
An Academic Council member of the varsity said, "On one hand, they (DU) are seeking Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) loans citing fund crunch, and on the other hand, they are hosting a magic show." "This is utter nonsense in the name of centenary celebration. Complete waste of money. The money could have been spent somewhere else," Associate Professor Naveen Gaur said.

The decision by aviation authorities to add 'jeerawan', a spice often sprinkled on poha, salads etc, to the list of items prohibited in hand baggage on flights evoked mixed responses from air passengers at Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport on Monday, with some terming it absurd.
Jeerawan, which contains red chillies and several other ingredients and is famous in Indore, has been prohibited in hand baggage as per safety norms laid down by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BSCA), a senior airport official told PTI.
A showcase kept at the airport to inform people about prohibited items contains a packet of jeerawan along with a pistol, knife, scissor, hammer and screwdriver.
Indore-based entrepreneur Sameer Sharma, a frequent air traveller, said, “I reached Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport two days ago to travel to Jammu and was shocked to see a packet of jeerawan in the showcase. This is absolutely absurd. Jeerawan cannot be kept in the category of hot spices like red chillies."
As per experts, jeerawan is made from cumin, coriander, fennel, clove, cinnamon, red chilli, asafoetida, turmeric, salt, dried mango etc. Apart from being a taste enhancer, it is also known to improve digestion and keep the body warm during winter.

The second cheetah death at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh was due to cardio-pulmonary failure, according to initial findings.
Uday was among the 12 cheetahs flown in from South Africa in February as part of the country's ambitious cheetah reintroduction programme. The six-year-old cheetah was healthy when brought to India, but was seen struggling to walk yesterday. Hours later, it died.
"As per the preliminary observation by veterinarians who performed the autopsy of the male cheetah, he died of cardio-pulmonary failure," said Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), Wildlife, JS Chauhan.
A panel of five experts, comprising a forensic expert each from Jabalpur and Bhopal, carried out the necropsy.
Blood and other vital organ samples of the cheetah have been sent for advanced testing at the School of Wildlife Forensic and Health at Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University in Jabalpur.
Only after the results of the advanced tests are known, the actual reason behind the cheetah's death can be ascertained.
Uday was found sluggish in his enclosure and a closer inspection revealed he was staggering, according to an official release.
It said the cheetah was found healthy until Saturday evening, but the medical team found him ailing the next morning. It was tranquilised and treatment started at 11 am. But the cheetah died at 4 pm.
Before this, a four-year-old Namibian cheetah named Sasha died of a kidney infection in Kuno in March. With the two deaths, the cheetah population at the National Park has fallen to 18.
'Project Cheetah' was launched last September, decades after the species went extinct in India.
A plane that was to carry the Arsenal women's team back to London following their Champions League draw with Wolfsburg burst into flames on the runway. According to Metro, the incident occurred on Sunday evening at Germany's Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport shortly before a Boeing 737 was due to take off.
An airport spokesman told the German newspaper Bild that a bird strike had caused the engine fire. Witnesses said that they heard a loud bang, following which the plane was stopped. Flames were spotted coming out of the plane, forcing the pilots to abandon take-off.
Fortunately, all passengers were evacuated and no one was hurt in the incident. However, the team was forced to stay in a hotel in Germany for an extra night owing to the mishap.
Later, Arsenal released a statement confirming the team returned home safely on Monday on a replacement plane.
An American Airlines plane on Sunday was forced to return to Ohio airport after a bird strike sparked an engine fire. A video going viral on social media shows the plane returning to John Glenn International Airport in Columbus as flames and smoke are seen coming from the right engine.
"@FAANews I just saw AA1958 with major engine issues just after take off. Flames shooting from the engine and wonky, pulsing noises from the aircraft," a Twitter user wrote while sharing a clip from the incident.

According to CNN, the Boeing 737 Flight 1958 had departed Columbus for Phoenix before the crew reported a bird strike on Sunday morning. The plane made it to the ground safely, with no injuries reported, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said, adding that an investigation into the incident is underway.

Speaking about the incident, a passenger aboard the plane told NBC 4 that he and others aboard the flight heard a loud clanking noise in the plane, with a pilot allegedly telling them they had hit a flock of geese shortly after take off.
The passenger also added that once the plane safely landed, they all were removed and taken to another flight that left later in the morning.
According to New York Post, this incident comes just days after another engine caught fire during take-off from the Charlotte Douglas Airport in North Carolina. No one was reported injured in the incident, which was later reported as a mechanical failure in the engine.

Scientists have discovered the reason why human hair loses its colour and turns grey as we age, reported New York Post. According to a team of scientists, melanocyte stem cells become stuck inside the hair follicle and are unable to produce pigment.
The findings were published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed, scientific journal Nature. For the study, scientists spent two years tracking individual cells in the fur of mice in order to determine how hair turns grey and closely examined the melanocyte stem cells known to control hair colour. They used special scans and lab techniques to study the cell-ageing process.
They discovered that the pigment-producing part of a stem cell would change as the mice would mature. ''The melanocyte stem cell system fails earlier than other adult stem cell populations, which leads to hair greying in most humans and mice,'' the study says.
As hair ages, sheds and grows back, melanocyte stem cells get stuck in a part of the hair follicle called the hair follicle bulge. As the stem cells stop roaming around the follicle and become fixed, they fail to mature into fully-fledged melanocytes. The hair then turns grey, white or silver because no pigment is being produced.
Mayumi Ito, the author of the study and dermatology professor at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine, said, “This is a really big step forward in understanding why we grey.”
He explained, ''It is the loss of chameleon-like function in melanocyte stem cells that may be responsible for greying and loss of hair colour.''
The researchers also suggested that if their findings hold true for humans, they could open up a potential way to reverse or prevent grey hair.
The study's lead investigator, Qi Sun, said, ''The newfound mechanisms raise the possibility that the same fixed-positioning of melanocyte stem cells may exist in humans. If so, it presents a potential pathway for reversing or preventing the greying of human hair by helping jammed cells to move again between developing hair follicle compartments.”

The world could breach a new average temperature record in 2023 or 2024, fuelled by climate change and the anticipated return of the El Nino weather phenomenon, climate scientists say.
Climate models suggest that after three years of the La Nina weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean, which generally lowers global temperatures slightly, the world will experience a return to El Nino, the warmer counterpart, later this year.
During El Nino, winds blowing west along the equator slow down, and warm water is pushed east, creating warmer surface ocean temperatures.
"El Nino is normally associated with record breaking temperatures at the global level. Whether this will happen in 2023 or 2024 is yet known, but it is, I think, more likely than not," said Carlo Buontempo, director of the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Climate models suggest a return to El Nino conditions in the late boreal summer, and the possibility of a strong El Nino developing towards the end of the year, Buontempo said.
The world's hottest year on record so far was 2016, coinciding with a strong El Nino - although climate change has fuelled extreme temperatures even in years without the phenomenon.
The last eight years were the world's eight hottest on record - reflecting the longer-term warming trend driven by greenhouse gas emissions.
Friederike Otto, senior lecturer at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, said El Nino-fuelled temperatures could worsen the climate change impacts countries are already experiencing - including severe heatwaves, drought and wildfires.
"If El Nino does develop, there is a good chance 2023 will be even hotter than 2016 - considering the world has continued to warm as humans continue to burn fossil fuels," Otto said.
EU Copernicus scientists published a report on Thursday assessing the climate extremes the world experienced last year, its fifth-warmest year on record.
Europe experienced its hottest summer on record in 2022, while climate change-fuelled extreme rain caused disastrous flooding in Pakistan, and in February, Antarctic sea ice levels hit a record low.
The world's average global temperature is now 1.2C higher than in pre-industrial times, Copernicus said.
Despite most of the world's major emitters pledging to eventually slash their net emissions to zero, global CO2 emissions last year continued to rise.

Britain's Prince William helped out an Indian restaurant during a royal visit on Thursday by taking a phone reservation from an unsuspecting customer.
The heir to the British throne and his wife Kate were visiting the family-run restaurant Indian Streatery during their trip to Birmingham in central England, when he took the call from someone seeking a booking for two people.
After checking with the owners as to the restaurant's location, he then had a discussion with the caller about when a table was free and whether they would have time to eat before catching their train.
"What name is it under?" the prince said as he concluded the conversation, without revealing his own name to the caller. "See you at quarter past two."
Prince William's office later said on Twitter: "Hope we told this customer to come to the right place...!"
As well as taking the booking, the royals also helped out preparing dishes in the restaurant's kitchen before continuing their visit in the city with a game of darts at an underground bar.

Killer heat waves are putting "unprecedented burdens" on India's agriculture, economy and public health, with climate change undermining the country's long-term efforts to reduce poverty, inequality and illness, a new study showed.
Extreme heat has caused more than 24,000 deaths since 1992 and has also driven up air pollution and accelerated glacial melt in northern India, said a team of scholars led by the University of Cambridge's Ramit Debnath.
India is now "facing a collision of multiple, cumulative climate hazards", with extreme weather happening almost every day from January to October last year, they said.
Mr Debnath told Reuters that it was "very important to figure out how we measure vulnerabilities to frequent extreme events", with the Indian government's own "climate vulnerability index" believed to underestimate the impact that longer, earlier and more frequent heatwaves will have on development.
As much as 90% of India's total area now lies in extreme heat danger zones, and it is not fully prepared, he warned.
"India has already done quite a bit in terms of heat mitigation - they actually now recognise heatwaves as part of their disaster relief package," he said. "But there's a need to optimise the pace of these plans."
"The adaptation measures that are being put on paper are quite substantial ... and I think they have a very strong solid plan, but it's how they are implemented."
The researchers also warned that heatwaves were weakening India's efforts to meet its "Social Development Goals", a list of 17 UN objectives to cut poverty, hunger, inequality and disease.

The Congress on Wednesday announced its fifth list of three candidates for the May 10 Assembly elections, replacing the one against Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Shiggaon.
A day after fielding Mohammed Yousuf Savanur as its candidate from Shiggaon in Haveri district, the party nominated Yasir Ahmed Khan Phatan in his place.
The party has fielded A C Srinivasa from Pulakeshinagar by denying ticket to its sitting MLA R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy, who today filed nomination as an independent candidate after it was clear that he will not be renominated.
Murthy, a Dalit, had won the 2018 assembly election with the highest margin of 81,626 votes, creating a record.
Murthy's house along with the DJ Halli police station was torched by a violent mob in August 2020, over a social media post shared by his relative.
In Bengaluru's K R Puram, Congress has fielded D K Mohan against BJP's Byrathi Suresh, a Minister in the Basavaraj Bommai government.
Interestingly, Suresh had won the seat on Congress ticket in the 2018 Assembly polls. He was among the 17 Congress-JD(S) MLAs who resigned, which had led to the collapse of the coalition government and paved the way for BJP to come to power in 2019. In the subsequent bypolls he won on BJP ticket.
In Mulbagal, the party has fielded B C Muddugangadhar. In 2018, the seat was won by independent candidate H Nagesh, who is now Congress candidate from Mahadevapura segment in Bengaluru.
The Congress has so far announced candidates for 219 out of total 224 seats (including in Melukote where it's backing a candidate of a different party).
Tomorrow is the last day for filing of nominations.

More than 100 seniors over the age of 60 took part in a group skydiving event in California, United States, in an effort to break a world record.
This group, which is named Skydivers Over Sixty, created formations in mid-air and broke two world records.
The 101 jumpers successfully constructed a snowflake formation on their fourth attempt, according to the organisation that organised the exercise.
The Southern California skydiving facility Skydive Perris posted pictures of the occasion on Instagram and noted that the elderly skydivers broke two world records.
"This was a big weekend for @p3skydiving as they landed not one but TWO world records. SOS (Skydivers Over Sixty) was able to complete a 1-point 101-way on Saturday, 4/15/2023, beating the previous record of a 75-way at Chicago in 2018. Then they wondered, why stop there? So they went back up and completed a 2-point 95-way on Sunday, 4/16/2023, beating the last record of a 60-way at Perris in 2017," the centre wrote in the post.
"Thank you everyone for helping make this dream a reality! You were all so amazing."
Arjun Tendulkar's IPL debut was widely followed as he played his first match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knight Riders. While Arjun, son of Sachin Tendulkar, could not scalp any wicket in his first match, the wait ended in his second match, that too in a tense last over against SunRisers Hyderabad. With SRH needing 20 runs in the last over, Arjun scalped his maiden wicket on the fifth ball as he dismissed Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was caught by Rohit Sharma at covers. Before that, Arjun looked like following a plan and delivered a couple of good yorkers to keep the SRH batters at bay.
MI ultimately won by 14 runs as Rohit Sharma was ecstatic after Arjun got his first wicket.

Talking about the match, Mumbai Indians defeated hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad by 14 runs in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday. Cameron Green scored a timely half-century to help Mumbai Indians post a challenging 192 for five after being asked to bat. The home team then kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 178 in 19.5 overs.
Earlier, Green scored an unbeaten 64 off 40 deliveries with the help of six fours and a couple of maximums.

New York has taken the crown of being the world's richest city, yet again, with the most millionaires in 2023, according to a report. The city has 3,40,000 millionaires, according to global wealth tracker Henley & Partners.
The city is followed by Tokyo and San Francisco Bay Area with resident millionaire populations of 290,300 and 285,000, respectively.
The report - World's Wealthiest Cities Report 2023 - covers 97 cities across nine regions worldwide (Africa, Australasia, CIS, East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia) and includes most of the world's top wealth hubs.
The US dominated the list with four of its cities - New York, The Bay Area, Los Angeles and Chicago - making it to the list. China has two of its cities (Beijing and Shanghai) in the list.
London has dropped to fourth place on this year's list with 258,000 resident high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), followed by city-state Singapore with 240,100. In 2000, London was the top city in the world for millionaires, but it has slipped down the list over the past 20 years.
The Big Apple - a nickname for New York City - is home to 3,40,000 millionaires, 724 centi-millionaires, and 58 billionaires. It is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by market cap (the NYSE and the Nasdaq). The city comprises the five boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, and features some of the world's most exclusive residential streets, including 5th Avenue in Manhattan where prime apartment prices can exceed $27,000 per square meter, according to the report.
Needless to say, Artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of humanity across nearly every industry and changing the world around us. Recently, Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai expressed his concerns about artificial intelligence, saying that the technology can be ''very harmful'' if deployed wrongly.
In an interview with CBS's “60 Minutes”, Mr Pichai said the negative side of AI gave him restless nights and called for new regulations to govern AI. “It can be very harmful if deployed wrongly and we don't have all the answers there yet – and the technology is moving fast. So does that keep me up at night? Absolutely,” he said.
When asked if the society is prepared for what's coming, Mr Pichai said, ''You know, there are two ways I think about it. On one hand I feel, no, because you know, the pace at which we can think and adapt as societal institutions, compared to the pace at which the technology's evolving, there seems to be a mismatch.
On the other hand, compared to any other technology, I've seen more people worried about it earlier in its life cycle. So I feel optimistic. The number of people, you know, who have started worrying about the implications, and hence the conversations are starting in a serious way as well.''
He further said that the technology will “impact every product across every company.” When asked what jobs would be disrupted, he said, "Knowledge workers'' such as writers, accountants, architects and, ironically, software engineers.
The Google CEO added that ''society must quickly adapt with regulations for AI in the economy, laws to punish abuse, and treaties among nations to make AI safe for the world.'' ''And I think we have to be very thoughtful. And I think these are all things society needs to figure out as we move along. It's not for a company to decide,'' Mr Pichai said.
Among the risks of generative AI that Pichai highlighted are so-called deepfake videos. “There have to be consequences for creating deepfake videos which cause harm to society.''
Meanwhile, Google also recently launched an AI-powered chatbot, Bard, in response to ChatGPT. When asked by CBS journalist Scott Pelley why Google had released Bard publicly when he didn't fully understand how it worked, Mr Pichai responded, “Let me put it this way. I don't think we fully understand how a human mind works either.”
He also admitted that Google did not fully understand how its AI technology produced certain responses.
Since its release last year, Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT has prompted rivals to launch similar products, and companies to integrate it or similar technologies into their apps and products. Recently, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also shared a blog post, calling the ''development of AI as the most important technological advance in decades.''

Talking about the match, Devon Conway slammed a blistering 83 off 45 balls while Shivam Dube blazed away to a 27-ball 52 as Chennai Super Kings posted an imposing 226 for six in an IPL match on Monday.
Opting to bowl, it was a struggle for RCB's bowling attack as the CSK batters went hammer and tongs from the onset.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said there is a strong undercurrent in favour of Congress in poll-bound Karnataka but pressed on his leaders to ensure that the party wins at least 150 seats so that the next government is not "stolen" by a corrupt BJP.
He also reminded everyone that people in the party have a duty to defend the idea of India from the RSS and BJP amid hatred, violence and attacks on the country's institutions.
The Congress leader arrived in Karnataka on a two-day event to take part in a series of events in Kolar, Bengaluru and Bidar before flying back to Delhi.
"Most of us are aware of what the BJP is doing to the nation in terms of hatred and violence, the attack on institutions. These are the things that are visible to everybody," Mr Gandhi said after inaugurating Indira Gandhi Bhavan.
Dwelling on his party's prospects in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly election, he said, "We are facing an election now in Karnataka and I am quite happy to see that there is a very strong undercurrent in favour of the Congress and I am confident that the party is going to win the election." The Congress leader expressed happiness that there was "certain amount of unity" among party leaders in the state. "I am happy to see also that there is a certain amount of unity among all our leaders, unity of purpose and unity of action. I saw all the leaders of Karnataka during the Bharat Jodo Yatra," he added.
Winning elections in a close manner will not work in Karnataka, Mr Gandhi said urging his leaders to win at least 150 seats of the total 224 in the Assembly.
"We have to win the election with 150 seats because the BJP is a corrupt organisation. The BJP has a huge amount of money that they have stolen from the people of Karnataka and they will attempt to steal the next government as well," he underlined.
The Congress leader said he was confident that if Congress campaigned in a united manner and stood together, then the party will win the election hands down.
"The essence of our country, the nature of our country is being attacked and it is our duty as Congress people, as people who have helped build the modern idea of India, as the institution, the organisation that has helped build the modern idea of India to defend it from RSS and the BJP." Lashing out at the Basavaraj Bommai-led dispensation, the former Congress president said everybody knew the state government in Karnataka is one of the most corrupt in the country.
"The tag '40 per cent Sarkar' has stuck. Everybody understands that the BJP in Karnataka is a symbol of corruption," Mr Gandhi said pointing out that the people of Karnataka are keen to teach a lesson to the '40 per cent Sarkar'.
Stating that the BJP government has "gone beyond being corrupt", Mr Gandhi underscored that no matter what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said or did, it was very clear to the people of Karnataka that the BJP wasted its time.
"They have stolen five years of theirs because this government did not belong to them. This was a non-BJP government that was elected and this was a government that has been stolen," the Congress leader said.
Congress has made corruption as a poll plank alleging that the ministers demand 40 per cent commission on public works from contractors.
Appealing to the Congress workers to work hard in this election, he said a message should be conveyed that the party is coming to power with a serious purpose to deliver things to the people of Karnataka.
In the outgoing 224-member Assembly, the BJP currently has 119 seats, followed by the Congress with 75 and the JD (S) with 28 seats. Two seats are vacant.
While polling for the Assembly election will take place on May 10, the results would be declared on May 13.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Nitish Rana was given a hefty fine by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following his on-field spat with Mumbai Indians spinner Hrithik Shokeen. After the KKR skipper's dismissal, Shokeen and Rana had an altercation on the field that saw MI players, including their stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, intervene. Rana seemed to have said something to Shokeen during that incident that didn't go down well with the match referee. Hence, Rana was given a 25% fine on his match fee.
As per an IPL release, Rana admitted to the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL's Code of Conduct.
Mumbai Indians bowler Hrithik Shokeen was fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Shokeen admitted to the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL's Code of Conduct.
For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding.
Even Mumbai Indians stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav was fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
As it was his team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Suryakumar Yadav was fined Rs. 12 lakh.
As for the match, the Knight Riders couldn't secure a win despite opening batter Venkatesh Iyer scoring 104 off just 51 balls. The Kolkata franchise had set a target of 186 runs for Mumbai Indians to chase. The Suryakumar-led side overhauled the total with 5 wickets in hand and 2.2 overs to spare.
Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Saturday said she did not get invitation for the inauguration of a giant statue of B R Ambedkar here on the latter's 132nd birth anniversary.
Ambedkar spoke about women empowerment but there was no invitation for a woman Governor, she claimed.
"...it was a big event. There was no any invitation for me. If I would have got the invitation, I would have come and participated, in the great personality our honourable Ambedkar ji. Not only, he is the father of our Constitution, but he has put forth his words for development of the country, for women empowerment particularly," she told news channels here.
"I also felt very bad.... I paid my floral tributes to Ambedkar ji yesterday," she said.

A constable allegedly beat up a senior policewoman after she asked him not to interrupt her while she was talking to a complainant of a rape case, police said in Gurugram on Friday.
A clash broke out between Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Poonam and constable Pravesh in sector 37 police station on Wednesday night, they said.
According to the police, the ASI asked the constable to not interfere while talking to the complainant of a rape case.
The matter escalated and a physical altercation broke out between them. The constable also threatened to kill the ASI but the other police officers present at the spot intervened and set them aside.
When senior officials were made aware of the incident, an ACP rank officer reached the police station and questioned them.
A senior police officer said that taking serious note of the issue, Inspector Sunita, who was SHO of sector 37 police station has been transferred to the police line and Inspector Aman Beniwal has been appointed as SHO.
On Thursday, ASI Poonam filed a complaint against Pravesh, following which an FIR was registered against him under sections 323 (causing hurt), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at sector 10 A police station.
Further probe is underway and action will be taken as per the law, a police officer said.

BY Vijayendra, the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, was seen seeking the blessings of Congress veteran G Parameshwara at a temple in Tumkur on Friday.
Mr Vijayendra is contesting from Shikaripura, his father's bastion, in next month's assembly elections.
The 49-year-old's visit to the Siddlingeshwar temple at Yediyur came three days before he is set to file his nomination papers from Shikaripura.
Mr Parameshwara, a former deputy chief minister and a prominent Scheduled Caste leader in Karnataka, was seen blessing Mr Vijayendra.
The BJP has fielded Mr Vijayendra from Shikaripura after much speculation and drama.
Several party workers had demanded that he should contest from Varuna against former chief minister Siddaramaiah, but the central leadership decided against it.
Mr Yediyurappa too had ruled out the possibility of his son taking on Siddaramaiah.
Shikaripura is considered a safe seat for the BJP, as Mr Yediyurappa has won it seven times since 1983.
However, Mr Vijayendra may face some anti-incumbency and resentment from some local leaders who were aspiring for the ticket.
"I am blessed to contest from the constituency that my father represented for 40 years. I am happy to contest from Shikaripur. It is a dream come true for me...It's unfair to say that I've been given a ticket as I am BS Yediyurappa's son," Mr Vijayendra told news agency ANI on Friday.
"Today, BJP has reached every nook and corner of Karnataka because of BS Yediyurappa and other senior leaders. Today, Karnataka is happy with PM Modi's leadership and double-engine government," he added.
